An Italian intelligence agent who was kidnapped last month in Afghanistan and wounded during a NATO-led raid that freed him has died, the Defense Ministry said.
Lorenzo D’Auria, 33, was one of two Italian agents briefly abducted by captors whom NATO identified as Taliban.
During the rescue mission by Italian and British special forces, D’Auria was shot in the head and neck and had to be put on a respirator soon after his release.
The other Italian agent was also wounded in the raid, though not seriously. Both were flown back to Italy for treatment. D’Auria died at a military hospital in Rome.
