Growth concept is validated

Re “I’ll take Manhattan -- and Pasadena,” Opinion, Aug. 26
It was a pleasant surprise to read William Fulton’s article about Los Angeles “growing just the way it is supposed to.”
I was privileged to be among the staff members in the city Planning Department under Calvin Hamilton when the “centers concept” was developed. Indeed, Fulton’s description of what was intended -- high-density development around centers connected by transit in order to allow preservation of single-family areas -- was seen as the natural development of Los Angeles. Subsequent iterations of that plan, as well as the way development is occurring, are a confirmation of that original concept.
It is satisfying to have such an affirmation of one’s work from a man of Fulton’s stature and reputation.
