‘Berd’ on a wire, or indoors

You might have seen the “Berd” hanging out on some telephone or power lines around town. Tossed into the air by a guerrilla street artist, the painted plywood cutout is secured on its perch with a combination lock as a counterweight. Bobbing in the breeze, it’s a cute and clever response to the sneakers that often dangle from utility wires, but as it swayed over intersections where citizens protested the war in Iraq, the dove-like creation seemed to be making another statement. What did it all mean? You won’t get a peep out of the artist, David Browne, but you can buy his winged piece for $100 in an array of colors, rigged and ready for indoor installation or public display at Berdhouse Gallery, 1505 1/2 Echo Park Ave., Los Angeles; (213) 482-9976.
