Jones won’t be disciplined by the Cowboys for fight

Troubled cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones won’t be disciplined by the Dallas Cowboys for a scuffle with his bodyguard that team owner Jerry Jones said resulted from joking banter that got out of hand and was quickly settled.

“They were literally kidding each other,” Jerry Jones said Thursday. “They were jiving around . . . and all of a sudden one of them starting saying some things, and here you go.”

Dallas police were called to an upscale downtown hotel because of the disturbance late Tuesday night. No charges were filed.

While not planning any discipline for Adam Jones, Jerry Jones acknowledged that he was “very disappointed in that we’re having to deal with this.”

It remained unclear whether the NFL planned any discipline. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a radio interview Thursday that the league was investigating the matter.

The Cleveland Browns sent tight end Kellen Winslow to the doctor for tests after he sat out his second straight day of practice because of an unspecified “illness.”

Browns Coach Romeo Crennel said Winslow, who has been plagued by injuries throughout his NFL career, has been sick for two days. Crennel would not say whether Winslow would play in Monday night’s game against the New York Giants.

Washington Redskins defensive end Jason Taylor practiced for the first time since the emergency surgery on his left calf.

“It felt good to be out here running around a little bit,” Taylor said. “But it’s only 17 days since we had it done. We’ll see how it responds.”

Taylor did not take part in all of the drills, and the team was going to be cautious about playing him Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

When Dwayne Jarrett left USC with a slew of school receiving records, few would have imagined his biggest honor early in his second NFL season would be getting voted player of the week -- of the Carolina Panthers’ scout team.

But the way Jarrett acted and performed in simulating the opposition in practice last week -- before spending his third straight game on the inactive list -- was a milestone in his rocky maturation process.

“To watch him run and participate and not sulk was one of the most satisfying things to me,” quarterback Jake Delhomme said.

Jarrett will now finally be on the field for more than just practice. With D.J. Hackett (knee) to sit out Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay and with kick returner and backup receiver Ryne Robinson (knee) put on injured reserve this week, Jarrett will get a uniform against the Buccaneers for only the 10th time in 22 games.

“It’s unfortunate it took somebody getting hurt for me to be active, but at the same time it’s an opportunity,” Jarrett said.

Quarterback Jon Kitna’s 36-game starting streak with the Detroit Lions is in jeopardy.

Kitna sat out a second straight practice because of an injured back, leaving Dan Orlovsky and Drew Stanton to split snaps.

Lions offensive coordinator Jim Colletto said the team might not know whether Kitna can play against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday until pregame workouts.
