The second Primetime Emmy Awards of 2024 are upon us.
The 76th Emmy Awards, celebrating the best of the 2023-24 television season, arrives just eight months after the ceremony for the 75th edition was held in January. Nominees from hit shows such as âShĆgun,â âThe Bear,â âHacks,â âThe Crownâ and âBaby Reindeerâ will assemble at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles on Sunday for the actual 2024 Emmy Awards.
âShĆgunâ and âThe Bearâ are among the shows that have already notched a few early wins at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards held earlier this month. Jamie Lee Curtis and Jon Bernthal won comedy guest acting awards for their roles on âThe Bear,â while NĂ©stor Carbonell of âShĆgunâ and Michaela Coel of âMr. & Mrs. Smithâ were awarded the guest actor prizes in drama.
Hereâs everything you need to know about the 2024 Emmy Awards.
When are the Emmys? Didnât we just have them?
The 76th Emmy Awards will be held on Sunday at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. The three-hour live telecast begins at 5 p.m. PT on ABC (and will be available the next day on Hulu).
This is a return to form for the Emmys, which are traditionally held in September. The 75th Emmys were postponed from their original date in 2023 to January because of the dual Hollywood strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA.
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which were held earlier this month, will air on FXX on Saturday at 8 p.m. (and will be available on Hulu the next day).
Times columnist Glenn Whipp believes itâs going to be a big night for âThe Bear,â âBaby Reindeerâ and âShĆgun.â
How can I watch them?
The live telecast will be broadcast on ABC, so you will need access to cable or a television equipped with a digital antenna. Cord-cutters will need to be subscribed to streaming services with live TV tiers, such as Hulu+ Live TV or Fubo. And thereâs good news for DirecTV subscribers for whom the channel was previously blocked: The contract dispute between the satellite service and Disney, the parent company of ABC, has been resolved.
Those not concerned about seeing the event live can stream it on Hulu starting Monday.
Who is hosting?
Father-son team Eugene Levy and Dan Levy, who co-created and starred in the beloved sitcom âSchittâs Creek,â have been tapped to host this yearâs ceremony. As Times television critic Robert Lloyd noted in his interview with the Canadian duo, itâs almost like a belated victory lap for them: âSchittâs Creekâ swept all seven of the major comedy categories at the 72nd Emmys, which were held in 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Levys said that their aim for the show is for it âto feel celebratoryâ with âa bit of an edge.â
âPeople ⊠are kind of excited that weâre not hard-edged comics, that there will be a kind of warmth to the room,â said Dan Levy. Added Eugene Levy: âYou want it to be funny, but itâs maybe a kinder, gentler approach.â

Eugene and Dan Levy spoke to Times TV critic Robert Lloyd about what it was like to sweep the Emmys in 2020, and how it might compare to hosting the awards show on Sunday.
When does the red carpet start and how can I watch it?
Preshow coverage of the event will begin at 2 p.m. PT on E! with a programming block that kicks off with âLive From E! Countdown to the Emmys.â The red-carpet coverage of the evening will begin at 3 p.m. with âLive From E!: Emmys,â hosted by Laverne Cox, who will be joined this year by Heather McMahan and Keltie Knight.
Over on ABC, Robin Roberts and Will Reeve will be hosting âOn the Red Carpet: Live at the Emmysâ beginning at 4 p.m. PT. For L.A. locals, KTLAâs live red-carpet coverage will begin at 3 p.m. PT.
What shows and actors are nominated?
FXâs Japan-set historical drama âShĆgunâ was one of the top nominees when Emmy nominations were announced in July and it is vying for the drama series award along with âThe Crown,â âFallout,â âThe Gilded Age,â âThe Morning Show,â âMr. & Mrs. Smith,â âSlow Horsesâ and â3 Body Problem.â (The series has already nabbed 14 wins at the Creative Arts Emmys.)
Jennifer Aniston (âThe Morning Showâ), Carrie Coon (âThe Gilded Ageâ), Maya Erskine (âMr. & Mrs. Smithâ), Anna Sawai (âShĆgunâ), Imelda Staunton (âThe Crownâ) and Reese Witherspoon (âThe Morning Showâ) are nominated for lead actress in a drama series. The drama lead actor nominees are Donald Glover (âMr. & Mrs. Smithâ), Walton Goggins (âFalloutâ), Gary Oldman (âSlow Horsesâ), Hiroyuki Sanada (âShĆgunâ), Dominic West (âThe Crownâ) and Idris Elba (âHijackâ).
On the comedy side, last yearâs winner, âThe Bear,â is again up for series, along with âAbbott Elementary,â âCurb Your Enthusiasm,â âHacks,â âOnly Murders in the Building,â âPalm Royale,â âReservation Dogsâ and âWhat We Do in the Shadows.â
The lead comedy actress field includes Quinta Brunson (âAbbott Elementaryâ), Ayo Edebiri (âThe Bearâ) and Jean Smart (âHacksâ), who have all previously won Emmys for their roles, as well as Selena Gomez (âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ), Kristen Wiig (âPalm Royaleâ) and Maya Rudolph (âLootâ). The lead comedy actor field features first-time nominees Matt Berry (âWhat We Do in the Shadowsâ) and DâPharaoh Woon-A-Tai (âReservation Dogsâ) as well as Television Academy favorites Larry David (âCurb Your Enthusiasmâ), Steve Martin (âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ), Martin Short (âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ) and the most recent winner of the category, Jeremy Allen White (âThe Bearâ).

Who will win an Emmy?
According to awards prognosticators, including Times columnist Glenn Whipp, âShĆgun,â âThe Bearâ and âBaby Reindeerâ are expected to have big nights.
âThe Bear,â which dominated the comedy field at the 75th Emmy Awards earlier this year, is expected to win the comedy series, comedy lead actor (Jeremy White) and comedy supporting actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) races once again. Also likely: another round of questions about whether âThe Bearâ is really a comedy.
Fellow FX series âShĆgunâ has long been considered the front-runner in the drama categories. The historical drama notched 14 wins at the Creative Arts Emmys and likely will add the awards for drama series, lead drama actress (Anna Sawai) and lead drama actor (Hiroyuki Sanada) to its haul on Sunday.
The full list of Whippâs predictions is available here.
FXâs âThe Bearâ and âShogunâ were among the top nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards announced on Wednesday.
Who are the presenters?
As usual, a number of nominees have been tapped to hit the stage as presenters at this yearâs ceremony, including Christine Baranski (âThe Gilded Ageâ), Matt Bomer (âFellow Travelersâ), Lily Gladstone (âUnder the Bridgeâ), Selena Gomez (âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ), Greta Lee (âThe Morning Showâ), Steve Martin (âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ), Nava Mau (âBaby Reindeerâ), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (âThe Bearâ), Martin Short (âOnly Murders in the Buildingâ), Jean Smart (âHacksâ) and Kristen Wiig (âPalm Royaleâ).
Catherine OâHara, Kathy Bates, Candice Bergen, Billy Crystal, Viola Davis, Allison Janney, Jane Lynch, Niecy Nash-Betts, Sam Richardson, Maya Rudolph, Dick Van Dyke and Steven Yeun are among the past Emmy winners who have been announced as presenters in this yearâs telecast.
The Television Academy also teased an Olympics crossover with appearances by swimmer Caeleb Dressel and rugby player Ilona Maher, who both won medals at the Paris Games.
