2012 in review: Notable deaths in theater

Including award-winning composers and memorable actors, the theater world lost some big names in 2012.
Marvin Hamlisch, who penned the songs for “A Chorus Line,” died in August in Los Angeles at the age of 68. His death came just as he was finishing his second season as lead conductor of the Pasadena Pops. The prolific composer had also just completed work on his last musical, “The Nutty Professor.”
L.A. theater audiences lost stage producer Joan Stein, who died in August at 59. For 10 years, she ran the Canon Theatre in Beverly Hills with her partner Susan Dietz.

Actress Lupe Ontiveros, another L.A. stage veteran, died in July at 69. She was a founding member of the Latino Theatre Company in downtown.
