Mariano Rivera’s final All-Star game ratings flat from last year

New York Yankee closer Mariano Rivera’s last All-Star game appearance may have been bad news for the National League, but it did little to boost ratings for the midsummer classic.
The 84th All-Star contest -- won by the American League -- drew an average audience of 10.9 million viewers for Fox, according to Nielsen. The audience numbers for the game at a hot and humid Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y., were virtually flat from last year’s record low.
Without Rivera, the numbers could have been lower. The audience peaked in the bottom of the 8th inning, when Rivera took the mound and quickly retired the side. Rivera is set to retire at the end of this season.
By market, Detroit had the highest rating for the pitching duel. Detroit Tiger Max Scherzer and New York Met Matt Harvey were starting pitchers. Tiger manager Jim Leyland also managed the American League squad.
