Golden Globes 2013: ‘Les Miserables’ wins best picture, comedy or musical

“Les Miserables” was named best picture, comedy or musical, at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday evening.
The film beat out four other nominees: “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” “Moonrise Kingdom,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.”
Unlike the Academy Awards, which names just one best picture, the Golden Globes name two — one in the drama category and one in the comedy or musical category.

This year’s contenders in the best picture (drama) category were “Argo,” “Lincoln,” “Django Unchained,” “Life of Pi” and “Zero Dark Thirty.”
The Golden Globes are chosen by fewer than 90 self-described L.A.-based entertainment journalists who often favor films with an international flair and big-name stars. Though their tastes do not align perfectly with Oscar voters’, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. can give a boost to late-charging award contenders.
Oscar voters have nominated nine contenders in the best picture race: “Argo,” “Lincoln,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Life of Pi,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Les Miserables,” “Django Unchained,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild” and “Amour.”
The Oscars will be handed out Feb. 24, and the ceremony will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane.
