Sunday’s SAG victory helped make Ben Affleck’s CIA drama the front-runner in the Oscar race, ahead of Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” which took two of the top acting prizes at the SAGs. Daniel Day-Lewis won for best actor for his performance as the 16th president, and Tommy Lee Jones was named actor in a supporting role for his portrayal of Rep. Thaddeus Stevens. (“Argo” also won the top award at Saturday night’s Producers Guild Awards.)
“I absolutely thought there was no way we would win this award,” Affleck said backstage at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. “You look at ‘Silver Linings Playbook,’ ‘Les Miz,’ ‘Lincoln’ — I thought, ‘Well, no matter what happens, I know we won’t win, and I’m OK with it.’”
Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence of the dramedy “Silver Linings Playbook” won best female actress. Anne Hathaway was named top female actor in a supporting role for her performance as Fantine in “Les Misérables.”
On the TV side, “Downton Abbey” was a surprise winner for top ensemble cast in a drama, and “Modern Family” took home the prize for ensemble cast in a comedy. Bryan Cranston won for best actor in a drama series for “Breaking Bad,” and “Homeland’s” Claire Danes won for dramatic actress in a TV series. “30 Rock” stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin won top comedy acting honors.
