Amy Winehouse documentary gets British release date; no U.S. deal yet

A documentary about the troubled Grammy-winning singer Amy Winehouse has set a release date -- but only in her home country of Britain.

“Amy” will hit British theaters on July 3, courtesy of Altitude Distribution. The release comes almost exactly four years after the singer’s death from alcohol poisoning in her London home.

The documentary is directed by Asif Kapadia, who previously won acclaim, including two BAFTA awards, for the 2010 documentary “Senna,” which followed the life and sudden death of Formula One racing superstar Ayrton Senna.

The Winehouse documentary will reportedly include several unreleased recordings of Winehouse’s music and home archival footage, similar to the much-discussed forthcoming Kurt Cobain documentary “Montage of Heck.”

The film has not landed a U.S. distributor, according to Deadline, which also reports that a few early screenings have garnered interest for American distribution. Messages left for the film’s British management company, Cinetic, which also handled films like “Boyhood” and “Before Midnight,” were not immediately returned.

American fans most recently heard Winehouse posthumously on “Lioness,” a 2011 collection of covers, alternate mixes and several unreleased singles. A planned play based on the singer’s life, to be performed by the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, was canceled in 2012 before it debuted.
