Easy dinner recipes: Turkey sloppy joes
Remember eating sloppy joes as a kid? In addition to being easy to make, a single batch comes together in less than an hour.
Here’s a recipe for a lighter version of the classic using ground turkey instead of ground beef. The turkey simmers in a mixture of Worcestershire sauce, chile sauce and brown sugar and is then piled high on soft hamburger buns.
Who says sloppy joes are just for kids?
Slim sloppy joes
Time: 50 minutes | Serves: 12
2 onions, chopped
1 tablespoon butter
Nonstick cooking spray
2 1/2 pounds ground turkey
2 cups minced celery
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 (12-ounce) bottle chili sauce
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
12 hamburger buns, toasted
Cook the onions in the butter in a 4-quart saucepan over medium heat until tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from the pan; set aside.
Spray the saucepan with nonstick cooking spray. Add the turkey and cook, stirring occasionally, until the turkey is no longer red, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the celery, bell pepper, brown sugar, salt, Worcestershire sauce, chili sauce and vinegar. Bring to a simmer, cover and cook 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Dollop the mixture onto the hamburger buns and serve.
