Getting there: The stretch of coast between Coos Bay and Bandon is equidistant from airports in Eugene and Medford.I flew into Eugene because it had nonstop flights from Los Angeles, though routes can change season to season.
From LAX to Eugene, nonstop service is offered on Alaska (a code share with Horizon), and connecting service (change of planes) on Alaska, United and America West. Restricted round-trip fares start at $198. Coos Bay is a two-hour drive.
From LAX to Medford, nonstop service is offered on Alaska (a code share with Horizon), and connecting service is offered on Alaska and United. Restricted round-trip fares begin at $198. Coos Bay is a two-hour drive north.
Where to stay: Sunset Bay State Park, off Cape Arago Highway, 12 miles southwest of Coos Bay; (541) 888-4902 for park, (800) 452-5687 for campground reservations,
Campgrounds at Bullards Beach State Park, two miles north of Bandon, and Umpqua Lighthouse State Park, about 20 miles north of Coos Bay, also have yurts. Bullards’ are similar in size and price to Sunset Bay’s. Umpqua’s are larger and include a bathroom with shower; $45-$65 per night.
More deluxe accommodations are available at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort lodge, 57744 Round Lake Drive, Bandon, OR 97411; (888) 345-6008 or (541) 347-4380, fax (541) 347-8161,
Where to eat: In Coos Bay, with a park picnic in mind, we grabbed sandwiches to go at Luigi’s, 801 Newmark Ave., (541) 888-9407. My “garbage grinder” was a greasy delight of meats, cheese and veggies for about $5.
We lined up with locals at Benetti’s Italian Restaurant, 260 S. Broadway, (541) 267-6066. Fine family-style food. Dinner entrees $9-$17.
In Bandon, Wild Rose Bistro, 130 Chicago St., (541) 347-4428. A quaint restaurant in Old Town. Steak, seafood, chicken and pasta dishes, most under $15.
