Authorities were searching early Saturday for a gunman who shot and wounded a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy in Walnut Park.
The shooting occurred when the deputy confronted the male suspect, who was walking near the intersection of Pacific Boulevard and Grand Avenue about 4 a.m., said Deputy Lillian Peck, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department.
The deputy had attempted to stop the suspect for unknown reasons when the suspect fired at the officer, hitting him, Peck said. The suspect then fled the scene on foot, heading eastbound on Grand.
The deputy was transported to a hospital, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
A sheriff’s SWAT team was dispatched to the scene as deputies continued to scour the neighborhood, searching for the suspect, whom they described as armed and dangerous. They cautioned residents to stay in their homes and to keep their doors locked.
