Boy, 10, dies after golf cart overturns in Beverly Crest

A 10-year-old boy who suffered a severe head injury when the modified golf cart he was riding overturned Sunday in an exclusive neighborhood north of Beverly Hills has died, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The boy was identified by L.A. County coroner’s officials on Monday as Mark Martinez. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in grave condition shortly after the crash, which was reported at 2:36 p.m.

Two other boys and two men who were in the vehicle at the time of the crash appeared uninjured, Humphrey added.

The Los Angeles Police Department was investigating the accident.

“It’s a tragedy,” Humphrey said.

Beverly Crest is located along Mulholland Drive with homes that typically list between $15 million and $50 million. It is common for residents to travel throughout the gated community by moped, bikes and golf carts, Humphrey said.

He said the golf cart involved in the crash had been modified with stylish features for aesthetic appeal but could not say whether the alterations had contributed to the accident.

An autopsy on the boy is still pending, coroner’s officials said.
