A Marine on the ground was killed Wednesday when a civilian plane crashed at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Ariz.
The Marine died when the T-59 Hawk struck a Marine vehicle near the runway, officials said. The pilot and passenger in the plane were treated and released at a local hospital.
The plane burst into flames after hitting the Marine vehicle.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the Marine we lost in this tragic accident,” said Col. Ricardo Martinez, commander of the Yuma base.
In its initial release of information, the Marine Corps did not explain how the accident occurred. The Marine’s name was not released pending notification of his family.
The plane is owned by a Nevada company that provides contract services to the military and defense contractors, according to the Associated Press.
