Off-duty LAPD officer killed on same street where cop died in March

An off-duty Los Angeles police officer was killed Friday afternoon when his pickup was struck by a cement truck in Beverly Hills on the same street where an officer was killed two months ago.

Cmdr. Andrew Smith confirmed the person killed in the crash on Loma Vista Drive was a veteran officer.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck was en route to the scene late Friday afternoon, according to a tweet from the department’s Southwest Division station.

In a tweet, Los Angeles Police Commission President Steve Soboroff called Friday’s accident a “truly horrific tragedy.”

The incident marks the fourth LAPD officer killed in a traffic incident since early March. The other three officers were on duty at the time.

Friday’s fatal crash was reported about 1:53 p.m. in the 1000 block of Loma Vista Drive, according to Beverly Hills police Sgt. Max Subin. The cement truck driver was taken to a hospital in serious condition, Subin said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

At least three large trucks have lost control on the winding street since March 7, when a dump truck struck an LAPD patrol car, killing Officer Nicholas Lee and injuring his partner.

Last month, motorcycle Officer Chris Cortijo died from injuries he suffered while he was waiting at a red light and was hit from behind by a woman suspected of being under the influence of drugs.

And on Saturday, LAPD Officer Roberto Sanchez was killed and another officer injured when their patrol vehicle was struck by an SUV in Harbor City. The driver of the SUV has been charged with murder in Sanchez’s death; his funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday.
