Two people leap from second floor of burning Newport Beach duplex

Two people jumped from the second floor of a Newport Beach duplex early Tuesday to escape a two-alarm blaze that tore through the building blocks from the beach, fire officials said.
The jumpers, a man and a woman, were treated by paramedics and taken to a hospital.
When firefighters arrived at about 4:15 a.m. at the building in the 300 block of 34th Street on the Balboa Peninsula, smoke and flames were pouring from the second story and the two people already had jumped to the ground, the Newport Beach Fire Department said.
Firefighters from Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach controlled the blaze in about an hour and 15 minutes, according to authorities. No firefighters were injured.
Investigators are trying to determine what started the blaze. Officials estimated damage to the building and its contents at $1.5 million to $2 million.
The flames also damaged the wood siding on an adjacent home.
Six people have had to leave their homes because of the blaze, fire officials said.
