About 10,000 Los Angeles-area residents were left without service Saturday because of storm-related outages, officials said.
The outages have affected thousands of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers from Lincoln Heights to South Los Angeles, said DWP spokeswoman Kim Hughes. Other areas hit hard were the Vermont-Slauson, West Lake and University Park neighborhoods.
“We’ve got a few [outages] scattered throughout the city,” Hughes said. “They’re mostly weather-related … lightning causing electrical surges.”
It’s not clear when power will be restored to the affected areas, she said.
“I can’t put guys on the poles if there’s lightning going through them,” Hughes said. “Our guys are insulated, but we still want to be careful.”
Thunderstorms pummeled Southern California on Saturday as a tropical storm off Baja California moved northward.
