Partygoer killed in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw shooting

A group of young men turned away from a party in the Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw neighborhood on Saturday night shot and killed one of the invited guests, police said.

The shooting was gang-related, said LAPD spokeswoman Rosario Herrera.

After being denied entry to the loud party on the 4600 block of Don Miguel Drive, a group of about four young men got into a shouting match with a guest. Harsh words escalated to gunfire around 11:55 p.m., police said.

The guest, in his mid-20s, was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. His name was not available.

The suspects remain at large.

[Updated 11:59 a.m. PDT July 14: Since 2007, 22 homicides have taken place within one mile of the location of Saturday’s fatal shooting, according to coroner’s data collected by The Times Homicide Report.

Only a handful of those killings, however, have occurred in Baldwin Hills’ hillside streets known as the “Dons.” The most recent was the 2011 homicide of Alonzo Ester, 67, a nightclub owner who was shot to death while driving his $300,000 Rolls Royce.

Dennis Roy Brown, a reputed gang member, was arrested in 2012 in connection with Ester’s homicide and is currently being held without bail, according to L.A. County jail records.]
