Though the presidency of Richard Nixon often is remembered for political polarization, it began with hopes for reconciliation, as seen in his inaugural address on Jan. 20, 1969. After acknowledging dignitaries, he addressed “my fellow Americans — and my fellow citizens of the world community.”
