Readers React: Garcetti’s ‘back-to-basics’ way is just fine

Re “A back-to-basics mayor,” Opinion, April 28
Jim Newton seems to want it both ways: He reacts warmly to L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti’s “back to basics” approach while also calling Garcetti’s achievements so far “less exciting.”
This is unfair. We read in Saturday’s paper that the city will start repairing broken sidewalks and that Garcetti will work with the grass-roots group Los Angeles Parking Freedom Initiative on changes to the enforcement system. That’s exciting.
In reality, the people of L.A. aren’t clamoring for the mayor to “build something impressive” (especially if it might fall down in an earthquake).
Better management of the city itself, Garcetti’s third priority, will result in a better quality of life for all thanks to fixed sidewalks and streets, faster emergency response times and lower crime levels. We can finally look forward to myriad smaller adjustments in the way the city functions that will impact us all daily.
