Readers React: A financial planner’s anti-union advice

To the editor: I was appalled to read advice offered to truck driver Julio Cervantes by financial planner Delia Fernandez in the “Money Makeover” feature. Fernandez advises that the first thing Cervantes should do to save money is stop organizing his fellow truck drivers to form a union. (“Time for trucker to focus on his family’s needs,” Jan. 25)
The companies that use truck drivers at our local ports to deliver goods to warehouses and rail yards want them to remain “independent contractors” with no collective bargaining rights and other protections afforded to unions. When have labor unions ever been formed without organizers making personal sacrifices?
If it’s anywhere at all, this anti-union advice should have appeared on the Op-Ed page, where it belongs.
