Three area middle schools capped undefeated seasons last week as the
2000-2001 Ocean View School District basketball tournament concluded with
championship action at Marina High.
Mesa View captured the boys’ eighth-grade division, while Vista View
won the seventh-grade boys’ title and Marine View took the girls’
seventh-grade crown.
Mesa View was a two-time winner, taking the eighth-grade girls’ event.
EIGHTH-GRADE BOYS
Mesa View, the regular season division champion, held off Marine View
in the tournament final, 41-36. Matt Loper, Nick Kosearas, Brandon
O’Bryan and Caleb Rogers keyed the title run by Coach Terry Coville’s
squad.
SEVENTH-GRADE BOYS
Behind the slashing drives of Samer Haddad, Vista View stormed back
from a seven point halftime deficit to post a 47-35 victory over Mesa
View in the tournament final. Haddad scored 17 of his game-high 27 points
after intermission. Hank Conger scored 13 points and Mitchell Roemer
added 12 for Mesa View.
SEVENTH-GRADE GIRLS
Marine View put the finishing touches on an unbeaten season by beating
Spring View in the division final, 28-22. Coach Kelly Painter’s team
emerged from the hard-fought contest after Kay Dee Lane hit five
pressure-packed free throws and Loren Kortizija had two crucial steals
and layups down the stretch. The outstanding play of Josnique Thomas, who
topped all scorers with 15 points, led Spring View.
EIGHTH-GRADE GIRLS
Mesa View (8-1) repeated their regular season championship by edging
Marine View in the final, 27-23. The play of Natalie Meyers, Katherine
Hennes, Hannah Campbell, Leah Needham, Melissa Preston and Taryn Brannon
was instrumental in Coach Kurt Lundberg’s squad winning the two titles.
Amy Shaw’s 10 points and the tenacious defensive play of Maureen Holloway
keyed Marine View.
