Softball: Vanguard wins four games in two days

COSTA MESA - Playing its second doubleheader in two days, Vanguard

University’s softball team earned a 9-1 Golden State Athletic Conference

victory over visiting Hope International to close play on Saturday.

Jill Jessen went 3 for 3 with one RBI for the Lions (8-6, 2-0 in

conference). Vanguard pitcher Alysia Atchley earned the victory, in the

circle through four innings, allowing two hits and one run.

In the opening game, Gina Liebengood pitched a two-hit shutout to lead

the Lions to a 5-0 victory over Hope International (5-7, 0-2). Jessen

went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

Liebengood picked up a victory Friday in relief when she finished the

final 3 1/3 innings for a 7-6 win over host Claremont Mudd Scripps. The

Lions answered from a 6-0 deficit after three innings. Jessen and Jessica

Thompson earned 2 RBIs each.

In the first game of the doubleheader against CMS, Vanguard won, 3-2,

as Liebengood pitched a complete game, striking out 10 batters.
