DO WE HAVE SOMETHING IN COMMON? What does Wells Fargo Bank, Oasis
Senior Center, Newport Harbor High School, Hoag Hospital, UC Irvine,
Starbucks, the Costa Mesa Police Department and Fire Department, Jewish
Federation of Orange County, Harbor Christian Fellowship, St. Andrew’s
Presbyterian Church and the Los Angeles Times have in common? They are
providing mentors to students in kindergarten through third grade at
Pomona, Whittier and Wilson elementary schools in Costa Mesa.
Additionally, many retired teachers and retirees from all sorts of
backgrounds have been volunteering along with Newport-Mesa Unified School
District administrators to spend an hour a week helping a student or two
master reading by the age of 9 as part of the Los Angeles Times Reading
by 9 program, according to Pam Eastman, literacy coordinator at Wilson
Elementary School in Costa Mesa.
Eastman notes that the mentors are making friends among themselves and
feeling a real sense of purpose as they help give children a tool they
need to be successful for the rest of their lives.
We still need hundreds of additional volunteers. If you, the Daily
Pilot reader, don’t volunteer one hour a week between now and June 15,
who will?
To volunteer or to find out more information about mentoring call:
Pomona Elementary School, Jill McWhertor, literacy leader, (949)
515-6980; Whittier Elementary School, Sarah Markel, HOSTS program

literacy leader, (949) 515-6995. Or mentor at the new Shalimar Learning
Center at the soup kitchen by calling (949) 646-0396.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF: Newport-Balboa Rotary Club President Wendell
Sawyer presented Service Above Self awards to Newport Harbor High School
teacher Joe Robinson and student Anat Herzog at Wednesday night’s meeting
for their unselfish work in assisting some 90 couples to attend the
school’s winter formal. Herzog took the donation of 90 used formal
dresses, as well as food from restaurants, to make the winter formal more
affordable for a number of students. Herzog, a junior at Newport Harbor,
received a $500 scholarship to be used for books or tuition at the
college she enrolls in next year. Congratulations!
