A Huntington Beach man died in custody this week at the Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana, Orange County sheriff’s officials said.
Scott McCollum, who was 47, was found dead in his cell at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, sheriff’s spokesman Damon Micalizzi said.
He had checked himself in Friday to serve a 35-day DUI sentence, he said.
The cause of death has not been determined, though he appeared to have health problems the department was monitoring, he said.
The investigation has been turned over to Orange County prosecutors, who look into all such jail deaths.
“We are investigating, but we have a policy of not commenting on ongoing investigations,” district attorney spokeswoman Farrah Emami said.
