Corona del Mar def.

Capistrano Valley

CORONA DEL MAR — Corona del Mar downed Capistrano Valley in three games to open the season Friday. The Sea Kings (1-0) won, 26-24, 25-17, 25-23, in their first effort since winning the CIF Southern Section Division II title last season aside from a Saturday scrimmage against San Clemente.

Senior middle blocker Gus Ellis and junior middle blocker Dylan Davies had ten kills each for the Sea Kings, and Ellis also added four blocks. Senior libero Spencer Brown had 18 digs, and junior setter Connor Bannan had 36 assists.

Seniors Jeff Carlson and Dillon Flynn both added two aces.

“We had a lot of unforced errors, and unfortunately, we had a lot of unforced errors by some of the people who have some of the most experience on our team,” said Corona del Mar coach Steve Conti. “That definitely needs to be cleaned up a bit by us.”

While the Sea Kings dominated enough to beat Capistrano Valley, the cohesion that’s necessary for tougher opponents wasn’t present yet, Conti said.

The Sea Kings play at Huntington Beach Wednesday.
