CIF SOUTHERN SECTION MASTERS TOURNAMENT:

NEWPORT BEACH — The top-seeded Newport Harbor High girls’ water polo team advanced to the CIF Southern Section Masters Tournament semifinals by winning a pair of games Friday at Newport Harbor.

The Sailors (30-3) eased past Sonora, 13-4, in the first round before edging Laguna Beach, 8-7, in the quarterfinals.

Newport Harbor will face Foothill in a semifinal today at 1 p.m. at El Toro High. The championship match is scheduled for tonight at 7:30, also at El Toro.

Against Sonora, the Division VI champion, the Division I champion Tars breezed to a 9-0 lead after a quarter. Junior Nicolina McCall and sophomore Kate Klippert each scored a game-high three goals, while senior Elizabeth Wheeler had a pair of goals. Senior set guard Amanda Simons had three steals, while senior Jessica Robinson and sophomore Kaleigh Gilchrist each had a goal and a pair of steals.

Morgan Vickers (one save), Lauren Miner (seven) and Chelsea Datt (four) split time in goal.

Newport Harbor was then up on Laguna Beach, 7-3, after three quarters, but had to withstand a Breakers rally in the quarterfinals.

McCall had game-highs of three goals and four steals for the Sailors. Gilchrist added two goals, an assist and three steals, while senior Mimi Bury had a goal, an assist and three steals.

SEA KINGS WIN TWICE

SANTA MARGARITA — The second-seeded Corona del Mar girls’ water polo team also advanced to the semifinals by topping Arroyo Grande, 14-4, and Santa Barbara, 7-2, at Santa Margarita High.

Corona del Mar (26-7) will play Los Alamitos today at 2:15 p.m. in a semifinal at El Toro High.

Against Arroyo Grande, the Division IV champion, CdM went ahead, 9-0, at half. Senior Allison Peotter had a game-high three goals, while juniors Leslee Kaczmarek, Victoria Kennedy and Heather Van Hiel each added two for the Sea Kings.

Santa Barbara, the Division II runner-up, was more of a challenge, but CdM outscored the Dons, 6-1, in the middle two quarters for the victory.

Seven CdM players — Van Hiel, Kaczmarek, Peotter, Carissa Dice, Kate Berry, Victoria Kent and Elise Molnar — scored one goal each. Junior goalie Kate Baldoni made six saves.
