Suspect, 60, tries to catch bus after bank robbery

You’d think most bank robbers would make sure they know their get-away driver.

But after a hold-up in Corona del Mar Wednesday afternoon, police said the robber was caught moments later waiting for the bus a short distance away.

Newport Beach police arrested a suspect after the man allegedly robbed a Corona del Mar bank of an undisclosed amount Wednesday afternoon, police said.

Daniel James Dunleavy, 60, of Long Beach, said he had a bomb and demanded money from a teller at the Bank of America, 3300 E. Coast Hwy., police said. After receiving the cash, he left only to be arrested a short time later while sitting at the bus stop at Iris Avenue and East Coast Highway, police said. The FBI believes the suspect could be the “Chinstrap Bandit” allegedly responsible for bank robberies in Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills and Long Beach.

Dunleavy was booked by Newport Beach police, and bail is set at $100,000. Anyone with information should call (800) 550-6273.
