NEWPORT COAST — Sophomore center fielder Sean Vogel went three for four with two RBIs and a triple for the Lightning in their Academy League game Tuesday.

Sophomore A.J. Wolfson earned his first varsity win and helped Sage Hill first-year coach Andy Berglund get his first league win.

Freshman pitcher/first baseman Jack Heffron went two for four with two RBIs and two triples for the Lightning (2-2, 1-1 in league).

IRVINE — Dylan Davis had 11 kills and Gus Ellis had 10 to lead the Sea Kings to a 24-26, 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 Pacific Coast League-opening win Tuesday.

Spencer Brown contributed 15 digs and Connor Bannan added 35 assists for Corona del Mar (12-4, 1-0 in league), which is ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division II coaches’ poll.

The Sea Kings, who won the Orange County Championships Monday, play at Edison Thursday.

SOFTBALL

La Quinta 11, Estancia 10

WESTMINSTER — Estancia senior Taylor West, who went four for five, hit her 10th home run of the season, tying her school record for most homers in a season in a nonleague game Tuesday.

West also had five RBIs and three runs, while Abby Koff hit a two-run triple for the Eagles (5-5), who play at Santiago Thursday.

COSTA MESA — Eagles senior Andrew Ayala was medalist with an even-par 36, leading Estancia in the Orange Coast League match Tuesday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Also scoring for Estancia (5-2, 4-0 in league) were Ryan Knapp (40), Jon Person (41), Chris Noren and Storm Hagen (both 45).

Estancia plays Ocean View on Thursday at Mile Square Golf Club.

NEWPORT BEACH — CdM ended in a three-way tie for medalist Tuesday. Taylor Keddington, Josh Starnes, and Camden Nicholson all shot four-over-par 35 at Newport Beach Country Club to defeat Irvine. Connor Corrigan shot 40 and Tanner Truthen finished with 43.

CdM (6-4, 2-0 in league) will play today at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course at 2:30 p.m.

IRVINE — Sea Kings sophomore Ryan Peyton won all 18 of his games played in the Pacific Coast League opener Tuesday at Beckman High.

Junior Chris Damion also swept for CdM (5-1, 1-0 in league) at No. 1 singles, as did the No. 3 doubles team of freshman Matt Fisher and sophomore Hayden Tremper.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, plays at Woodbridge today.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Sage Hill 86, Los Amigos 82

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — The Lightning were down late in the meet, but rallied for the nonleague win Tuesday at Los Amigos High.

Seniors Danny Harold and Ryan Barth took the top two spots in the 200-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 7.68 seconds and 1:12.67, respectively. Harold’s time was a CIF Southern Section Division IV consideration time.

Sage Hill (4-0) then won the 400 freestyle relay to clinch the win, with the team of Nick Wan, Jake Blitzer, Andrew Dorne and Beau Caillouette finishing in 3:41.32.

Dorne, a sophomore, had a CIF automatic time in winning the 500 free (5:14.92), and also won the 200 free with a consideration time of 1:56.60. Caillouette, a senior, won the 50 free in 24.65 seconds and the 100 free in 53.62.

Sophomore Stephen Krieger wont he 100 back in 1:02.98, another CIF consideration time.

The Lightning have their next meet April 9 at Oxford Academy.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Sage Hill 81, Los Amigos 81

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Sage Hill won the meet-ending 400-yard freestyle relay to salvage the tie in the nonleague meet Tuesday at Los Amigos High.

The relay team of juniors Nancy Benner, Jordan Smith-Newman, Dylan Conroy and Cameron Cline won the race in 4 minutes, 21.51 seconds for Sage Hill (2-1-1).

Conroy won the 200 freestyle in 2:25.37 for the Lightning, as well as the 100 butterfly (1:18.75). Smith-Newman captured the 200 individual medley (2:43.16), also winning the 100 backstroke (1:15.99).

Cline won the 50 free in 28.49 seconds. Benner won the 500 free in 6:40.82.

The team of Madi Swayne, Kay Fecker, Kelly Carpenter and Benner also won the 200 free relay for the Lightning in 2:11.97.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Sage Hill 15,

NEWPORT COAST — Christina Liu had seven goals and one assist for the Lightning in a nonleague game at Sage Hill Tuesday.

Hayden Furey had six goals and two assists, while Sally Mace (one goal), Jordan Team (one goal) and Hana Hunt (one assist) also contributed for Sage (4-1-1). Lightning Coach Chris Marshall said CdM did not play all of its varsity players and he’s hoping to schedule a game against a full varsity squad for CdM.

ONTARIO — Cody Gates won the shot put and Connor Rose came in first in the 800 meters to help the Sage Hill School boys become co-champions of the meet that included 28 teams Saturday.

Gates’ mark in the shot put was a personal record, 44 feet, 5 inches. Rose finished the 800 in 2 minutes, 6.6 seconds. Lion Wintemute was second in the 400 in 54.1 seconds. Sean McElroy took third in the 1,600 in 4:48.9 and the 3,200 in 10:41.0.

On the girls’ side, Cait Williamson won the 800 in 2:25.4 to help the Lightning finish seventh out of 29 teams.

Megan Kim was second in the 100 in 12.6 seconds, which is a school record.
