YOUTH SCENE:

Six Huntington Beach athletes set new event records in their respective divisions at the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation’s Orange County Track and Field Championships on May 4 at Laguna Hills High.

Overall, 17 Huntington competitors finished first in their respective division events.

The top four finishers in each event advance to compete June 1 at the Southern California Championships in Downey.

The following Huntington athletes established new division records: Jillian Schutz set two in the girls’ Division 00 50-meter dash (8.30) and the 100-meter dash (16.00); Emily Gray in the girls’ Division 01 long jump (7-feet-6); Danielle Votendahl in the girls’ Division 98 softball throw (114-4); Nicholas Welch in the boys’ Division 00 100-meter dash (15.30); Javier Sanchez in the boys’ Division 98 200-meter dash (30.30), and Luke Fell in the boys’ Division 95 softball throw (231-4).

? Little League Baseball

The Huntington Valley Braves won two games in weekend Juniors League play.

The Braves first defeated the Dodgers 8-1. Nick Gates threw a complete game and struck out 11 with just one walk.

Justin Reed and Mike Glass each had two hits and Reed and Blake Kirkenslager both scored twice.

The Braves also beat Westminster 4-1 behind the one-hit pitching of Lance Siegel. In 6 2/3 innings, Siegel struck out 10 before being replaced by Aaron Sheeks who earned the save by recording the final out by strikeout with the bases loaded.

The Braves took the lead in the top of the fifth when Glass’ sacrifice fly to left field scored Kirkenslager.

Kirkenslager had singled to open the fifth.

In Majors Division play, Garrett Garcia hit a three-run home run and Nick Krakower hit a two-run homer and threw just 60 pitches, to help get the Red Sox past the Dodgers, 7-3.

Also adding a big shot to the Red Sox offense was Clay Morris who had a two-RBI ground-rule double.

Blake Diamond made two key catches in center field.

? AYSO soccer

The HB Red Sox, an Under-12 Division Select girls’ team from Region 55, captured first-place in the Area 11K AYSO spring season.

Regions 43, 55, 56, 143, 117 and 177 also competed in spring play.

The Red Sox , coached by Deb Doherty, went undefeated at 7-0-1 and had the lowest goals-against record in the division.

The defense was led by Hana Lambur, Morgan Renaud, Nicole Rodriguez, Amber Rodriguez, Clara Wietbrock and goalie Emma Silvestri. Halfbacks who controlled the midfield were Lauren Anderson, Emilie Bergman, Maddie Bragg and Kyanna Nelson.

Strikers Dana Conlisk, Katie Gainous, Devon Graber and Jessica Johanscik led the offense.

? Water polo

The Huntington Beach Water Polo Club sent three teams down to San Diego last weekend to compete in the 15th annual San Diego Cup Age Group Water Polo Tournament.

Huntington’s fourth-grade-and-under coed team placed second out of nine teams in its division.

Team members Skyler Munatones and Gabe Duplantier made the division’s all-tournament team.

The sixth-grade-and-under (AA) boys’ team placed 15th out of 32 teams and the eighth-grade-and-under (AA) boys’ team finished fourth among 32 teams. Bret Bonanni mad the eighth-grade-and-under all-tournament team.
