MAILBAG:

Cuts in airline service from John Wayne Airport to Las Vegas, Oakland, Hawaii and Austin, Texas, do not reveal how costs can be cut, so canceled service can be restored (“Costs force cuts at JWA,” June 28.)

Most cuts can be blamed on high fuel costs that make these markets unprofitable under the old departure rules.

For Las Vegas and Austin, airplanes must take off totally in the wrong direction and fly many miles in the wrong direction before being allowed to turn onto an efficient route. For Hawaii and Oakland, airplanes take off in the opposite direction of preference and must fly in that direction many miles under antiquated FAA rules.

The FAA has instituted efficient departure and approach rules for the congested northeast corridors of the USA. We can expect similar improvements at John Wayne Airport, so airlines can stay in business.
