Sailors open league with big game against Los Al

Last month, when Newport Harbor High Coach Jason Lynch discussed Los Alamitos, the Griffins were the top-ranked boys’ water polo program.
The Griffins haven’t fallen too far in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll. They’re No. 2 now.
But the Sailors have moved up four spots since then to No. 5.
The two will clash tonight at 7 when Newport Harbor (7-3) plays host to rival Los Alamitos (11-1) in a Sunset League opener with championship implications.
The teams play once in league, making it a vital match. They were scheduled to play Wednesday, but Lynch said the game was moved due to the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur. Last year, Newport Harbor beat Los Alamitos, 8-6, to clinch its second straight Sunset League title.
