POP WARNER FOOTBALL:

Touchdown runs in the first quarter by Donald Rice, Max Redfield and Elijah Herrera allowed Huntington Beach to take command against Fullerton on Saturday, and the early lead led to a 28-0 victory over the Titans in Pop Warner Football Midget Division play.

Rice, Redfield Herrera all rushed for touchdowns behind the blocking of Trenton Aschoff, Brenden Henderson, Marcus Stepancich, Everett Gilliam, Patrick Griley, Shane Heath and Jake Lesinski who also kicked the extra points.

Zachary Gates added a touchdown in the second quarter on a quarterback sneak to complete the scoring in a game where the mercy rule went into effect.

Huntington’s defense got the shutout behind the play of Brody Kyler, Tala Atoafa, Joseph Rivera, Zachary Young, Grant Lowman, Cody Boyd, Dee Atwood, Eric Weimer and Jarred Peterson.

The playoff-bound Green Chargers play their final league game at 2 p.m. Saturday hosting the Santa Ana Monarchs at Edison High.

? Jr. Midget Division

Huntington 30, La Habra 0: The Green Chargers continued their league domination by shutting down their seventh straight opponent in blanking the host White Lions at La Habra.

Peter Russo, Tyler MacLeod, Vinnie Dugard-Lopiccolo and Treavon Coley scored touchdowns for the Chargers and MacLeod also was successful on three PAT kicks.

Trevor Borkowski, Steven Tovatt, Aaron Vargas, Brett Adams and Allen Vogelsang all contributed to a Green Chargers’ rushing attack that amassed 350 yards. But the defense also had a huge hand in the victory, as Borkowski came up with several sacks, Vargas intercepted a pass and Roman Smith had a fumble recovery.

The Green Chargers, who have already secured a playoff berth, are the lone undefeated D-I Jr. Midget Division team in the Orange Empire Conference.

Huntington hosts the Santa Margarita Silver Mustangs at noon Saturday at Edison High.

? Jr. Pee Wee Division

Huntington 34, South Coast 0: The Green Chargers ended their regular season with an exclamation point by routing the host Tritons at San Clemente on Saturday.

Huntington, which next will compete in postseason play, struck quickly by turning a 66-yard drive on its first possession into a score. A 31-yard run by Alex Ruiz on a double reverse highlighted the drive, which ended on a 10-yard scoring pass from Keith McCord to Danny Cassaro.

Hunter Martinez scored a defensive touchdown and McCord hooked up with Alex Lowman for another score on offense. Hunter Simmons and Johnny Siebel scored rushing touchdowns to account for the other Huntington Beach scores.

? Mighty Mite Division

Huntington 18, La Mirada 14

In a battle that pitted a pair of 5-1 teams against one another, Huntington scored on the final play of the game to cap a long touchdown drive that upended the host Matadores on Saturday at La Mirada.

Late in the fourth quarter, the Matadores mounted a serious scoring drive but failed to convert on a fourth-down play at the Huntington 13-yard line and turned the ball over on downs leading, 14-12, with 2:50 remaining.

With one timeout left and further pushed back due to a holding call on first down, Huntington was still able to piece together a long drive that took the Chargers from their own three to pay dirt. They passed their way downfield with Bryson Betty totaling 50 yards on three receptions, the last of which took the Chargers down to the four yard line.

With time expiring, Chase Ault was able to run in for the winning touchdown on the final play of the game.

The Chargers struck first, getting a four-yard touchdown run from Kyle Drinnon during a first-half scoring drive that was set up by a 50-yard run by Justin Martinez that took the ball down to the La Mirada four yard line.

La Mirada rallied for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to take a 14-6 lead, although Huntington was able to pull to within 14-12 midway through the quarter when Joe Flannery scored on a one-yard run.

? Challenger Division

Huntington 42, Cypress 18

Cameron Shanberg scored two touchdowns, Kevin Hernandez scored on a 30-yard run and Tyler Gordon, Berk Bisak and Cole Sarver also had touchdowns, as the Chargers got past the Centurions Red.

Ian Deyden and Zach Toler also had long runs that fell just short of the goal line.
