Golden Potatoes 2 Skillz that Killz 1: The Golden Potatoes avenged an earlier loss by handing Skillz that Killz their first loss of the season in AYSO Region 56 Under-12 Division play.
Neither team could score in the opening quarter, as the Potatoes were led on defense by Andrew Gerosa and the Skillz by Griffin Clement. The Potatoes had the game’s first real scoring opportunity when Gavin Kirkreit slotted a ball into open space in the opening minutes of the second quarter, which allowed teammate Garrett Mullins to gather the ball and put it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Potatoes lead.
The lead didn’t last long, though, as Ruben Gutierrez just slipped a shot past the Potatoes’ goalie Chad Faas to tie the score at 1 heading into the half. The Potatoes took the lead for keeps in the third quarter as Mullins was credited with an assist when he sent a cross to an open Connor Venanzi, who scored what turned out to be the decisive goal.
The play of Faas and defenders Mullins, Gerosa, Venanzi and Luke Heydorff, kept Skillz off the scoreboard the entire second half.
