It’s Momen Month at two local galleries

A series of major paintings and sculptures by Karl Momen is featured this month at Laguna Beach’s Marion Meyer Contemporary Art and Endangered Planet Gallery through Nov. 10.

Momen, an international artist whose works are in public and private collections in Europe, Japan and the U.S., is best known as the creator of the epic 87-foot tall “Metaphor: The Tree of Utah” sculpture that is located adjacent to Interstate 80 in Utah’s stark Bonneville Salt Flats. Born in Iran in 1934, Momen moved to Germany in the late 1950s and studied art and architecture there. Momen moved to Sweden in 1961 and, after establishing himself as a successful architect, began to work full-time as an artist and sculptor in 1978. He currently lives in Stockholm, Sweden, and frequently works in the U.S. at his studio in Sausalito.

Lee’s ‘Ringmaster’ at Rohrer Fine Art

Rohrer Fine Art will open the exhibition “Ringmaster,” featuring the artwork of Lawrence Lee with an artist’s reception and opening from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The show runs through Jan. 10.

Using unusual mediums such as India inks and tea alongside traditional pencils and watercolors, Lee’s work is a carnival-like swirl of imagery. His world of talking creatures and plants characterize the strangeness and randomness of life.
