SAN LUIS OBISPO — Senior Matt Murphy converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute to force two scoreless overtime periods in the Big West Conference deadlock Wednesday night.

With the goal, Murphy became the Anteaters’ all-time points leader with 75 (two points for a goal and one for an assist).

Murphy, a senior midfielder, had been tied with former Anteaters Brad Evans and P.J. Polowski for most career points. Murphy is now tied for second in UCI annals with 30 career goals.

Cal Poly opened the scoring in the 77th minute on a goal off a corner kick.

No. 20-ranked UCI (8-1-5, 1-1-3 in conference) posted a 21-10 shot advantage, including 6-2 in overtime.

Freshman Andrew Fontein had three saves for UCI, while Eric Branagan-Franco had 11 saves for the Mustangs (8-4-3, 3-2-1).

The Anteaters return to action Saturday at No. 10-ranked UC Davis.

Cal Baptist 3, Vanguard 2

RIVERSIDE — Gabriel Gonzalez converted a penalty kick three minutes into overtime for the hosts in the Golden State Athletic Conference clash Wednesday.

The loss was the first in seven conference games for No. 14-ranked Vanguard (7-4-2, 5-1-1), which rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime.

Vanguard’s Ryan Kenney scored with assists from Scott Roquemore and Tom Culver in the 67th minute to make it 2-1.

Dane Gallion then scored off a rebound, with Tomislav Colic getting the assist, in the 84th minute to pull the Lions even.

Vanguard had 21 shots, while the Lancers finished with 13.

Sophomore goalie Trevor Herrara had five saves for Vanguard.

Jeff Redinger had eight saves for Cal Baptist (7-5-2, 3-3-1).

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 12,

Long Beach State 9

IRVINE — Sophomore Brandon Johnson tied a career high with six goals to pace the Anteaters in the nonconference clash with their Black and Blue rival Wednesday at Anteater Pool.

The No. 9-ranked Anteaters led, 6-4, at halftime and scored all five of the third-quarter goals to create a comfortable cushion.

Matt Johnson had 13 saves for the winners (8-8), who return to .500 by winning six of their last seven games.

The 49ers (9-11) scored five straight goals to close to within 11-9 with 1:52 remaining, but could not complete the comeback.

UCI plays host to NAIA member Concordia Friday at 7 p.m.
