LOGAN, Utah — The Anteaters were tied at halftime and within four with 10:46 remaining, but the Aggies extended their winning streak to 57 in regular-season nonconference home games to drop UCI to 0-6.
Junior guard Michael Hunter had 17 points, including four three-pointers, while freshman Eric Wise added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists for the visitors, who received 10 points off the bench from sophomore guard Patrick Rembert.
Rembert made four of five field-goal tries in 17 minutes, but the Aggies proved to be almost as impressive from the field. Utah State (5-0), which came into the game ranked No. 1 in the nation in field-goal percentage, shot 62.5% for the game (30 of 48) and 69.6% in the second half (16 for 23).
UCI had a season-low six turnovers, but lost the rebounding battle, 32-23, and shot 40% from the field.
“I was proud of our players,” UCI Coach Pat Douglass said. “They did their best to stick to the game plan and gave their most consistent effort of the season.
“We kept our composure in a hostile environment [7438 at the Smith Spectrum] and that is a very positive sign for a young team.”
Douglass credited Wise’s defense for helping limit senior forward Gary Wilkinson to eight points, 10 fewer than his season average coming in.
Tyler Newbold led the winners with 21 points.
UC Irvine returns to action Sunday at Pepperdine at 2:05 p.m.
