Clippers lose Jeff Green, who agrees to one-year, $15-million deal with Orlando Magic

The Clippers lost one of their top free agents Friday afternoon when veteran forward Jeff Green agreed to a one-year, $15-million contract with the Orlando Magic, a person close to the situation confirmed.

Green was the Clippers’ biggest in-season addition last season, joining the team in February as part of a trade that cost the Clippers guard Lance Stephenson and a first-round draft pick. Green ended up being a three-month rental, averaging 10.9 points and 3.4 rebounds a game in a part-time starting role.

Green cannot sign with the Magic until the free-agency moratorium ends on July 7. His new contract would represent a significant raise from the $9.2 million he made last season.

The loss of Green won’t sting nearly as much if the Clippers are able to land superstar forward Kevin Durant, who they were scheduled to meet with Friday in the Hamptons on Long Island, N.Y.

Retaining Green was part of the Clippers’ fall-back plan that would also entail keeping most of the team’s free agents.

But there’s no assurances it will happen. Guards Jamal Crawford and Austin Rivers as well as center Cole Aldrich are being pursued by a host of teams in addition to the Clippers, with forwards Wesley Johnson and Luc Mbah a Moute also expected to receive interest from outside suitors.
