Baseball: USA 18U team wins gold medal

In the third inning of Sunday’s gold medal game between the USA 18U baseball team and Cuba, play was stopped with USA winning, 1-0. The game was canceled because of effects from Hurricane Odile, but USA was declared the gold-medal winner of the COPABE 18U Pan American Championship in La Paz, Mexico, after going 8-0 in the tournament.
Pitcher Kolby Allard from San Clemente struck out seven until the game was called in the bottom of the third. What an off season it has been for Allard. He was the MVP of the Perfect Game All-American all-star game in August and now gets to come home with a gold medal.
Besides Allard, also coming home with gold medals are Lucas Herbert of San Clemente, Blake Rutherford of Chaminade, Peter Lambert of San Dimas and Kyle Molnar of Aliso Niguel. All five are set to sign with UCLA in November.
