Baseball: Young players give hope to Chatsworth and El Camino Real

With San Fernando having won the City Section baseball championship twice in the last three years, people seem to be thinking that powers Chatsworth and Woodland Hills El Camino Real are on the decline. Hold off on the supposed demise of those two programs.

This summer in the Valley Invitational Baseball League, Chatsworth is 10-1 under new Coach Curtis Scott. The Chancellors have been showing off three young pitchers in sophomore Josh Garcia and juniors Anthony Mayorga and John Cashman. Their top hitter has been senior first baseman Riley Conlan.

El Camino Real is rebuilding fast with a group of players who were standouts on the junior varsity level. Sophomore left-hander Jeremy Polon has been the team’s top pitcher this summer. He has 22 strikeouts and just two walks in 15 1/3 innings.

“He’s got a lot of potential,” Coach Josh Lienhard said.

Sophomore outfielder Dylan Hirsch, last season’s JV player of the year, is fast and finding ways to get on base. Another pitcher throwing well is sophomore Jordan Berg, a JV all-leaguer who throws three pitches for strikes.

The VIBL playoffs are set to begin on Saturday.
