You never know how a teenage basketball player is going to react when he faces a heckler for the first time. Junior Nick Henzgen of Chaminade was receiving plenty of taunts from a couple of Crespi students during Monday night’s San Fernando Valley Invitational semifinal at Alemany.
The tension was rising in the fourth quarter when Crespi had closed to 54-51 with 2 1/2 minutes left. But that’s when Henzgen made his fourth three-pointer of the night, all from the corner, and Chaminade never looked back in a 64-53 win over the Mission League rival Celts.
“I had no idea who they were,” Henzgen said. “But I like it. It makes me play better.”
Henzgen even smiled after his second airball of the night. He had tamed even the hecklers.
Chaminade improved to 8-0, getting 23 points from Michael Oguine. Freshman Michael Wilson hit two threes in the third quarter to boost the Eagles. Brandon Bolosky scored 16 points for Crespi (8-1).
The most impressive asset for Chaminade is its matchup zone defense. It’s going to cause trouble for opponents in league play. Chaminade will play Cathedral in Tuesday’s 7 p.m. final at Alemany. Cathedral received 30 points from Kobe Paras in a 77-67 win over Alemany.
In consolation games, Milken continued its impressive play with a 57-54 win over Chatsworth. Jordan Rosenbloom scored 14 points and Josh Mehdyzadeh had 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Other scores: Crescenta Valley 74, Canyon 64; St. Genevieve 66, Grant 63; Agoura 52, Granada Hills 46. Village Christian received a school-record 50 points from Bennie Boatwright in a 97-66 win over Saugus.
In San Luis Obispo, Marin Catholic upset Bishop Montgomery, 61-60, and will play unbeaten Riverside North in Tuesday’s championship game of the Mission Prep tournament. Stephen Thompson Jr. had 34 points for Bishop Montgomery. North defeated Gardena Serra, 50-49. Ian Carter led Serra with 16 points. Dikymbe Martin had points for North (7-0). Campbell Hall defeated Mission Prep, 56-48, with Aaron Holiday scoring 22 points.
St. Joseph defeated Taft, 56-41.
In a Bell-Jeff semifinal, Buckley defeated Fremont, 57-41. Bell-Jeff won the other semifinal.
San Marino received 16 points from Alex Cate in a 47-34 win over Alhambra.
