Boys’ basketball: No call helped Bishop O’Dowd beat Mater Dei
- Share via
There was a moment just before the end of regulation at Saturday’s Open Division state championship game between Oakland Bishop O’Dowd and Santa Ana Mater Dei that could have been disastrous for Bishop O’Dowd.
A Bishop O’Dowd player tried to call a timeout in a tie game. Bishop O’Dowd had no timeouts left. The official didn’t call the timeout. If he had, it would have been a technical foul.
Bishop O’Dowd went on to defeat Mater Dei, 65-64, in overtime on a free throw by Ivan Rabb with 0.8 seconds left in the overtime.
Coach Lou Richie said, “Mater Dei is a great team. We were very fortunate.”
