Football: Birmingham mourns loss of former players

Birmingham Coach Jim Rose and his football team were in mourning after learning that two former All-City players, Alex Manu, 18, and Isaiah Hastings, 19, were killed on Friday night in a car accident in Sylmar. A third former player, Eldridge Salguero, was seriously injured in the collision.
The three were members of the College of the Canyons football team. Salguero’s younger brother, Sterling, is a standout junior running back at Birmingham. Salguero was listed in critical condition Sunday at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center.
Athletic Director Rick Prizant said players met with Rose and school counselors on Saturday. Counselors will also be made available to students on Monday, he said.
“There were several completely distraught,” Prizant said.
Canyons football players also were grieving on Saturday. Coach Ted Iacenda said grief counselors were made available.
