Racing! Kentucky Derby picture goes upside down with Good Magic defeat
- Share via
Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as the favorite for the Kentucky Derby has to be a California-based horse.
The Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream on Saturday saw Promises Fulfilled go gate to wire to upset Good Magic, who was atop most of the Kentucky Derby polls. Good Magic, bought for $1 million and trained by Chad Brown, got an excellent stalking trip before he started to make a move on the far turn. But by the time he entered the top of the stretch he flattened out and never threatened Promises Fulfilled and finished third.
This in no way dooms Good Magic’s road to the Derby as a win in his next prep will make this race nothing more than a blip. Good Magic gained all his respect by easily winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. It was his first win in three starts.
Promises Fulfilled gained entry into the Kentucky Derby by virtue of the 50 points he got for the win. However, he will likely have one more prep before the first Saturday in May. He paid $38.40 to win.
Trainer Dale Romans had three horses in the race, with Free Drop Billy considered the best of the lot. But that colt was scratched making Good Magic the .70 to a dollar favorite. Strike Power finished second, 2 ¼ lengths behind.
Next Saturday, the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita will feature Bolt D’Oro and possibly McKinzie, considered the best two horses the West Coast has to offer at this time.
Santa Anita review
The expected matchup between Dream Tree and Midnight Bisou in the Grade 3 $100,000 Santa Ysabel didn’t materialize as Dream Tree was scratched. But Midnight Bisou lived up to expectations with a 2 ¼-length win over Thirteen Squared. She got a perfect trip from jockey Mike Smith who confidently gave her a hand ride down the stretch of the 1 1/16-mile race.
Midnight Bisou paid a tiny $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10 for trainer Bill Spawr.
“I wasn’t concerned about the distance,” Spawr said. “No matter where you put her, she’s going to try. She’s push button. We’re looking at the Santa Anita Oaks [April 7] next.”
Smith was also pleased with the 3-year-old filly’s effort.
“I thought she might be a little too keen early on but then she settled really nicely and she did better than I expected going into a two-turn race,” Smith said. “She’s getting better even faster than I thought she would.”
Santa Anita preview
It’s a pretty miserable Sunday card at Santa Anita. This may be one of the first early signs this meet that the lack of horses running could be a problem like it was last year. We hope not. Some insist it’s not a horse population problem but a lack of those horses actually running.
Anyway, you’ve got a nine-race card starting at 12:30 p.m. The $100,000 Tiznow Stakes, a mile for Cal breds, was canceled when only four horses entered. The remaining card has two races with five horses and two races with six horses. Five of the races are restricted to 3 year olds. There is even a claiming race with a tag of $6,250, the lowest they offer at Santa Anita.
Here’s the field size, in order: 7, 5, 5, 6, 6, 8, 7, 8, 9.

Well, with the cancellation of the Tiznow Stakes at Santa Anita, there are none.
Bob Ike’s SA play of the day
NINTH RACE: No. 6 Vasilika (7-2)
Hoping this race stays on turf because it is one of the bright spots on the card. Sharp recent winner Vasilika was claimed for $40,000 by Jerry Hollendorfer, who steps this five-time winner up into the allowance ranks. She is versatile, tries hard and obviously likes to win races. Box her in the exacta with sharp maiden winner Achira (5-2).
Saturday Result: Lady Ninja dueled inside, put away her pace foe, then tried very hard but couldn't hold off the winner when settling for second in the eighth race.

Ed Burgart’s LA play of the day
EIGHTH RACE: No. 2 Sepertist Dash (2-1)
He makes his first start for perennial leading trainer Paul Jones and switches to last meet’s leading jockey Jesus Ayala. The 5 year old faced much stronger fields last year and was only 5-2 five outs back when third vs. talented Flash N Bling, who since ran second in the Grade I Go Man Go Handicap. He returns in a non-winners-of-two field.
