American fencers have record performance at world championships

It was a good week for the U.S. fencing team.
Though the American men and women finished the world championships with a pair of sixth-place finishes in team foil on Sunday, they won five medals over the course of seven days at the Moscow competition.
That ranks as the country’s best performance at a world championships.
Daryl Homer led the way, becoming the first American male to medal in saber with a silver. Alexander Massialas, Gerek Meinhardt and Nzingha Prescod also won silver and bronze in individual events.
The women took bronze in team saber.
“We’re all fencing great,” Meinhardt said during the competition. “We all know we have the potential to get on the podium and to win, and we’re all really excited.”
Previously, the U.S. record was held by the 2006 team that won four medals in 2006. The Americans won six medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
