Opening day at Del Mar on Wednesday brought out more than just partygoers and horse racing fans. It’s the day for the fabulous hat contest, and people showed up with their greatest imaginations on display on their heads.
Hats with cherries, hats with eggs, hats with an Eiffel Tower welded to iron were among the spectacles.
“It’s a day to have fun,” said one San Diego resident who brought her three grandchildren to the track with hats made from scratch.
