Kerri Walsh Jennings, Phil Dalhausser highlight beach volleyball field

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings and 2008 Olympic gold medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers lead a world-class field that will compete in the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball on July 22-28 in Long Beach.

The 2012 London silver medalists April Ross and Jennifer Kessy, ranked No. 1 internationally, will also compete in an event that features 10 total Olympic medalists and competitors from 16 countries.

In addition to the FIVB Grand Slam, the event will feature the inaugural World Series Cup, in which the top two U.S. teams will take on the top two international teams in what creator Leonard Armato hopes will become a Ryder Cup-esque tradition.

“The U.S. has been a dominating force in the growth of beach volleyball around the world and I am so excited for the fans of the sport to have an opportunity to see the highest level of competition return to the U.S. after 10 years,” Armato said in the news release.

Walsh Jennings will pair with Whitney Pavlik in her U.S. return after having her third child. That duo, along with Ross and Kessy, are pegged as two of the top teams on the women’s side. Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Hochevar and Jenniger Fopma and Brooke Sweat are the other two American squads.

On the men’s side, Dalhausser and Sean Rosenthal will be one U.S. pairing, while 2012 Olympian Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson are the No. 5 ranked team in the world. Rogers, who elected to retire from international competition after the 2012 Olympics, is competing with Ryan Doherty, and Casey Jennings and Stafford Slick round out the American competitors.
