Readers choose Hawaii’s best beach, resorts, town, restaurants, more

Readers of Hawaii Magazine have chosen their favorite town, beach, resort, drive, and more, extolling the glories of the 50th state in the March/April issue.
Ballots were cast for 2015 Readers Choice Awards in nearly 100 categories.
Here are nine bests from the magazine that may help those planning to visit the islands:
Luxury hotel: St. Regis Princeville Resort (Princeville, Kauai). Many rooms overlook stunning Hanalei Bay.
Budget hotel: Kaanapali Beach Hotel (Lahaina, Maui). The beachside property immerses guests in authentic Hawaiian experiences.
Beach for stretching out in the sand: Kaanapali Beach (Lahaina, Maui). The three-mile stretch of sand was also voted “Best beach for swimming.”
Hiking trail for beginners: Diamond Head Summit Trail (Honolulu, Oahu). The 1 1/2-mile (round-trip) trail climbs nearly 600 feet to the rim of a dormant volcano.
City or town: Lahaina (Maui). Capital of the Hawaiian kingdom in the early 19th century, this west Maui town is now filled with trendy art galleries and restaurants. (Honolulu finished third in this category behind Hanalei, Kauai.)
Golf course: Kapalua Resort (Kapalua, Maui). This northwest Maui property features two top-ranked, championship courses.
Scenic roadway: Road to Hana (Maui). A breathtaking, sometimes nail-biting, experience awaits along this spectacular coastal drive with its hairpin turns.
Restaurant, $61+ per person: Mama’s Fish House (Paia, Maui) on Maui’s North Shore. Mama’s is known for freshly caught fish.
Hawaiian food restaurant: Helena’s Hawaiian Food (Honolulu). Locals know Helena’s as the place for authentic dishes such as kalua pig and cabbage, luau squid and, of course, poi.
