OTHER SPORTS : CSUN Vaulter Mayes Limps Way to All-American Honor

Monica Mayes, a senior at Cal State Northridge, placed seventh in the vault at the U.S Gymnastics Federation nationals in Oshkosh, Wis., despite bone spurs in both ankles.
“I had to limp a little,” Mayes said, “and turn my foot sideways just so I could walk.”
Before the nationals, Mayes received three cortisone shots in four months--the maximum allowed by her doctor.
“It was hard to go out there day after day because there was a lot of pain,” Mayes said. “And sometimes I used to think I was too old to be doing gymnastics.”
Mayes was named an All-American.
Ken Stanley, volleyball Coach at Pierce College, wasn’t concerned with his team defending its state championship when this season started. He was more worried about where the Brahmas would place in the Southern California Volleyball League.
Pierce (13-5, 10-5) lost its top four players from last season but has managed to hold on to fourth place with two games left.
The top three teams in the SCVL qualify for the state playoffs.
